Homemade Bath Salts

While I was searching the globe (er, the internet) for some nifty bridesmaids gifts, I came across this simple recipe for making your own bath salts.  What a clever idea for a girly gift!

I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but I gathered the necessary ingredients and gave it a go.

Cast of Characters:
~ 1 cup Epsom Salt
~ 1 cup Sea Salt
~ Food Coloring
~ Essential Oil

This carton of Epsom salts cost around $3 and it can be found just about anywhere. The benefits list of Epsom salt is long. It's used to help with everything from aches and pains to constipation. Yeah.

I apologize for the lighting in this post's photos. It was dark and rainy outside so I had to shoot with the light I was given.

Dump the salts into a large bowl and add some drops of food coloring. I went with yellow since it was my wedding color.

You'll need to stir it for a few minutes to get everything evened out, but I promise that you wont end up with 'wet' salt or anything.

Add your chosen essential oil. Only a few drops are really needed. I used oil from my stash of soap making supplies.

Keep stirring!

Once you have it all evened out, you can immediately pour it into whatever jars or containers you mean to store it in. I always have a supply of various mason jars, so I chose some half pint jars with a squat shape for the bridesmaid gifts.

This recipe made exactly enough to fill three of them, which was perfect for my three ladies!
Personalization is a common theme among bridesmaid's gifts, so I glued some scrapbook paper to the top lids and put a scrapbook letter with their first initials on each jar to give them a little something. Then I tied some of leftover rope from the cat scratcher around the necks and voila!

I like these kinds of gifts that are a little more organic. Since they are homemade, you know exactly what's in them. If you are unsure about your receiver's sensitivities, use some craft paper to make cute little tags and list the handful of simple ingredients, that way they can decide for themselves if it's something they can use or not.

I totally love these.

They were SUPER easy. And canning jars are on sale right now! Bonus!

I want to make them again and experiment with more colors. Maybe some multi colors!
